Maya Mental Ray: Transitioning for Maya Software to Mental Ray

 Final

Maya Sprites - Pixie Dust

Maya Goals Part 2: Controlled Mud Drop

I know it's past the deadline but I just want to complete them for myself.

Maya Goals Part 1: Mud Drop

Maya: Instancing 7-12

I couldn't get the ray traces shadows to work so I used depth map ones instead.

Adaptation: Further Detail + Positioning

For the most part the trees are complete modelling wise and now I'm in the process of completing the rest of the scene.

Here's a few renders of the trees in different positions since the original concept art just had them in a default position surrounding the mother and facing the camera. I've concentrated on the children facing the mother and having the children in her view but I've also included one where two are behind her.

If anyone can give an opinion of which setup is best that'd be helpful. FYI: this is just preliminary so the heights won't be even in the end; I'll have the mother on a little mound to reinforce her position.

Adaptation: Tree Modelling Nearly Complete

Hi all, just realised how long it's been since my last post which is a little bit too long (especially after an indulgent holiday), but never-the-less I'll give it my all this final week.
The trees are nearly done, just need to incorporate the faces, adjust the trunks for the separate designs and also the snake roots. Afterwards, it'll be the island and underwater sections but I with my design style it shouldn't take that much more time. Then I can commit the rest of my time experimenting with textures and lighting getting the fairy tale feel just right.

This twisty tree took the most time, I couldn't figure out how to properly create this kind of shape but in the end I used separate cylinders to create the final canopy.

Adaptation: Face Modelling 1

For each of my trees I need the face of the its respective child and woman. I've modelled out the first face focusing on making child-like features like chubby cheeks. I'll use it a a base model for the rest of the faces just changing them slightly so they're not all the same. Also they might be a bit too smooth for the style I'm going for so after I smooth them I'll experiment with hardening edges in certain places to make it seem more wood-like.

The initial model has it's eyes open but since then I've decided to shut them like they'd be in a slumber.

Adaptation: Tree Modelling 4

Modelling for the first tree is nearly done, just some refinement needed here and there. The canopy turned out better than I expected, it should look good once lit and textured.

Adaptation: Tree Modelling 3

Getting there bit by bit, just need to tweak a few things and then I can move onto the face and canopy.

Adaptation: Tree Modelling 2

I'm now adding in more polygons and pushing in more detail. The non-smoothed version still looks very jagged and rough but since the scene is meant to look like it's carved from wood that might work in my favour. Once the trunk is finished the canopy should be pretty simple to model out.

Adaptation: Tree Modelling

Howdy, nothing too interesting going on at the moment visually like photoshop concept art, just thought I'd post up a little bit of progress. I've dipped my toes into maya and started modelling my first tree. First attempt went sour as I tried to use a high poly model to begin with (big no-no) and now I've begun with a lower poly that hopefully have a brighter future.

#1 - :(

#2 - better

#3 - smoothed

More to come real soon
